Human Bowen Therapy

Bowen Therapy continues the healing work of Tom Bowen (1916 – 1982). Bowen was born in Melbourne, Australia, and worked in his clinic in the neighbouring city of Geelong. In 1975 the Victorian State Government inquired into his work with Bowen Therapy, and found that his success rate was about 88%.

Bowen Therapy involves a series of gentle moves across the muscles, tendons and ligaments. These moves are made on precise parts of the body. By relaxing the muscles, the whole body moves from a “fight or flight” mode to a relaxed state that allows healing.

In fact, an essential idea of Bowen Therapy is that the body has an in-built ability to heal itself. The gentle Bowen moves stimulate the fascia, which then passes on the necessary messages throughout the body about how to heal itself and put itself back into balance.

Fascia, which is mainly collagen, covers every organ, bone, nerve and muscle in the body – and it connects them all. This means that by influencing the fascia in one part of the body we can benefit many other parts of the body. The fascia under the skin contains the lymphatic system, and Bowen Therapy certainly helps the lymphatic system work more efficiently. But fascia is also an important communication pathway around the body, and plays a vital role in telling the body how to heal itself. Fascia functions more efficiently when the body is properly hydrated, which is why it is an advantage to drink plenty of water, especially before a session.

Another feature of Bowen Therapy is the short pauses between groups of moves. These pauses allow the body to start the work of healing – and the healing will often continue for 7 – 10 days after the session.

For those who are used to a massage the first differences you will notice are that the moves are very soft and gentle, there is no oil used, and you remain clothed.

Some people come for a Bowen Body Balance. This is as relaxing as a massage and, at the same time, is like a “tune up” of your whole body, mind, emotions and energy. Most people say that they sleep very well after a Bowen Body balance session.
